Unit Title: Hard Love by Ellen Wittlinger Day Title: Zine Research & Reading Lesson Outcome: Students will be able to: o Ask relevant questions o Find information on the internet o Make decisions regarding the truthfulness of internet content Standards: CE 1.4.1 - Identify, explore, and refine topics and questions appropriate for research. CE 1.4.2 - Develop a system for gathering, organizing, paraphrasing, and summarizing information; select, evaluate, synthesize, and use multiple primary and secondary resources CE 1.4.4 - Interpret, synthesize, and evaluate information/findings in various print sources and media to draw conclusions and implications. CE 2.3.1 - Read, listen to and view diverse texts for multiple purposes such as learning complex procedures, making work-place decisions, or pursuing in-depth studies. CE 2.3.4 - Critically interpret primary and secondary research-related documents. Materials Needed: computer lab, list of questions Launch: Have students make a list of questions about zines and make observations about zine information in Hard Love. Learning Activity: 1. Break class in half 2. Half will go to the computer lab and half will go to the library. 3. After 25 minutes have the two groups switch 4. Their assignment is to read whatever interests them about zines. Assessment: What was the most interesting fact you found during your research? Reading: For the rest of the hour students have time to either silent read or read with a partner. They must take some form of notes.
